The Psychology of Using Curved Design Shapes in Interiors

Curved designs aren’t just a trend; they are steeped in psychological benefits that can transform the way we feel at home.

I have something which might curve (sorry!) your perspective on decorating your home – the psychology behind using rounded shapes in your interior spaces. Straight lines and sharp angles have had their fair share of the limelight, but it’s time to smooth things out and explore the softer side of things. Curved designs aren’t just a trend; they are steeped in psychological benefits that can transform the way we feel at home.

The Soothing Nature of Curves

Ever wondered why a room full of sleek, angular furniture can sometimes feel a bit, well, harsh? Sharp lines have a boldness to them that’s undeniable, but they can also make a space feel more formal and less inviting. Rounded shapes, on the other hand, tend to have a gentler vibe that can make your home feel more welcoming.

From the rolling hills in a landscape to the soft curves of a river, nature doesn’t stick to straight lines. Bringing curves into your home can create a sense of calm and relaxation that’s hard to achieve with straight edges alone.

…and this isn’t just a guess, there have been a few studies (like this one about curvy furniture) which have looked at the effect of curved versus straight lines in homes on people and how they feel – including this study, which compares the impacts of different furniture on people’s emotions. They found that environments with curvy furniture evoked more positive emotions – such as feeling relaxed, happy, and hopeful – than did rectangular furniture.

Enhancing Flow and Creativity

Curved designs can do wonders for the flow of your home. Instead of the abrupt stops and starts that come with angular designs, curves guide your eyes and footsteps more smoothly through spaces. This can make even the smallest room feel more open and dynamic. One of my favourite designers, Abigail Ahern (check out her informative Instagram) is a big fan of giving a bit of a flowing journey through a room (for example, by placing small round side tables in places that get you to meander through the room, rather than walk in a straight line.

Plus, there’s a bit of science behind the idea that rounded forms can boost creativity. So, why not inspire your next big idea with a beautifully curved desk or a whimsical, round light fixture?

Curves are more Sociable

Rounded shapes can encourage inclusiveness and a sense of unity. They often promote interaction between people, as there are no sharp corners that might separate individuals. There’s no “us and them”.

I love my circular dining table, it’s perfect for dinner with family or friends. You can see more rounded shapes in the floor lamp and bubble chandelier (lots of different bubble lights here)…and the dining chairs are also curved (top tip: they were a bargain at Dunelm and have lasted really well, even with a young child).

Safety and Accessibility

If you’ve got little ones running around and/or you’re a bit clumsy like me, incorporating rounded furniture can be a good move. Psychologically, rounded edges are perceived as safer than sharp edges, which can be seen as a threat (a holdover from evolutionary instincts to avoid sharp objects that could cause harm).

A coffee table with rounded edges is less likely to cause bumps or bruises compared to its sharp-cornered counterparts. It’s about creating a space where you can relax without worrying about the painful encounters with furniture.

Design Tips for Curving Up Your Space

  1. Start Small: Not quite ready to invest in big pieces? Try incorporating round accessories like vases, mirrors, or even round frames to soften your space without the commitment.
  2. Mix and Match: Combining straight and curved lines can create a balanced look that harnesses the best of both worlds. Think a rectangular sofa with a round coffee table, or round dining chairs with a square table.
  3. Focus on Focal Points: Consider where a curve might create a striking impact. Maybe it’s a rounded corner shelf or a circular dining table. These can be focal points that draw the eye and soften the overall feel of the room.
  4. Think About Flow: Use curved pathways, like a semi-circular rug or a round ottoman, to guide movement in your living spaces. It’s not just about looks; it’s about making the space work better for you.

As you dive into the world of curves, remember, the goal is to create a home that feels right for you. Whether it’s a statement piece or subtle touches, the incorporation of rounded shapes should enhance your living environment, making it a space where you can truly unwind and feel at ease.

Happy decorating!
